Dutch born Chef Maarten Smeets comes to Houston with a well rounded international food experience. Having graduated a European Culinary Art School, he received his early real-world training at Claridge's Hotel in London's swanky Mayfair working in its award winning, glamorous kitchen, now operated by Michelin star chef Gordon Ramsay.

Chef Smeets' London adventure jumpstarted his international career, not just in hotels and large food-operations, but also in small intimate establishments. Spending a number of years running his own eatery in Belgium which was tremendously received. In addition chef Smeets donated time with another close friend and restaurant owner, who was trained by Michelin star chef Marco Pierre White, to beneficial food shows in Europe.

After 4 years chef Smeets spread his wing once again and arrived to Aruba in order to explore Caribbean's food culture as well as experience South America's culinary heritage. After working with award winning kitchen legends Chef Klaasen & Chef Kars, both trained by Michelin star chef Jonnie Boer in the Netherlands and being Chef for the best Green Globe certified hotel on Aruba, chef Smeets was ready for a new international adventure. Sunset Grill, AAA four diamond rated restaurant & winner of "best restaurant in the Caribbean", put his travel plans on hold.

Now he will continue to safeguard the restaurant's reputation as THE steakhouse on the Island. Taking it's level of service even higher, aspiring to the challenging AAA Five Diamond rating.
